Ladies of Isshin-ryu at The Jeremiah Center
Tenacity
isn’t something ladies generally need to practice, especially when it
comes to self-defense techniques. Still, the Ladies of Isshin-ryu met
to sharpen each others skills on Saturday, January 16, 2010. David and
Julie Gabbard were our gracious hosts and we all enjoyed the day and
learned from each other.
Shihan Carol Burris worked with us
during the first session on generating power from the ground up through
our hips and core. We all took home practical ways to deliver more
power and intensity in our punches. We also practiced gaining ground
quickly and effectively while delivering powerful technique.
Stephanie
Allen Huskey got our hearts pumping by working with basics followed by
practical self-defense moves straight from the charts. #10 hand basic
has always been one of my personal favorites and we practiced that with
partners. It was great. We practiced the principals of Gojo-ryu by
stopping our opponent’s power followed by the delivery of devastating
technique.
With Sandra Strong, we worked on strategic body
positioning during kumite. We took with us some great ways to utilize
side to side movement instead of moving straight forward or straight
back. We feel more confident approaching your opponent from the side
with various techniques based on what we learned from Shihan Strong.
The
day was not complete without a discussion about the upcoming IIKA
events and how we can encourage and engage every lady involved in
Isshin-ryu to reach their individual potential as a karate-ka. We came
up with some ideas to honor current and past Ladies of Isshin-ryu
karate which we hope to implement in the coming year. Please feel free
to check the Ladies of Isshin-ryu tab on the IIKA website to get more
information about this group of ladies and what they are up to
throughout the year.

Aslinger, Diane Kuipers, Kaci Inmann, Pam Byars, Rebecca Byars, Lori
